| "How
WE Describe our Apples”
Duchess...................................................................
Early August
“THE” early old time pie apple. Highly sought after by our
“seasoned” customers as one of the premiere Pie apples.
Melba
......................................................................
Early August
One of the earliest apples at our orchard - a very nice fragrant
bouquet. Sweet and not overly hard with a beautiful pink blush.
Whitney
Crab...........................................................
Early August
The Old Fashioned pickling crab - Also a great sweet “lunch
box” apple. This golf ball sized apple is quickly disappearing
in Wisconsin Orchards. Still here Though!!
Pristine....................................................................
Early August
Very Unique. Early yellow apple with flavor having a slight
hint of pear. Limited quantities.
Paula
Red...................................................................
Mid August
The tried and true early all purpose apple. A sweet-tart favorite,
great for early eating and baking. Some hold this to be the
best sauce apple available.
Wealthy.....................................................................
Late August
The one & only!! The hot selling pie and sauce apple.
This apple is red over yellow blush and cooks down for those
who don't want a firm apple in their pies.
Zestar........................................................................
Late August
The new rising "Star" in the apple industry for
both growers and all of you "eaters"!! From the
University of Minnesota, the same people who released Honeycrisp,
a sweet tart Fabulous early eating apple. This apple is a
must have for apple lovers.
Chestnut
Crab........................................................Early
September
One of our two crab apples at the orchard, the smallest but
maybe the largest flavor of the farm. A tremendous wine-like
sweet flavor accompanied by a crisp texture and very juicy.
Gala.....................................................................Early
September
Not quite like you are used to, This variety of Gala grown
at Connells is sweet and also crisp. Some Galas are not this
crisp. A medium sized apple that is best suited for eating.
Mclntosh................................................................Mid
September
Some of the oldest trees on the orchard. This apple is a mostly
red apple & is semi-tart, well suited for all purposes.
For those who like a not so hard eating apple or an apple
that cooks down in a pie. We also make our apple butter with
the Mac.
Cortland.................................................................Mid
September
A beautiful white fleshed apple, a little sweeter & crisper
than the Macintosh but the same as an all around apple. A
bit more firm in a pie & slightly larger than a Mac.
Sweet
Sixteen........................................................
Mid September
Flavor has an almost floral bouquet to it. Yellow fleshed
this apple is fairly sweet and most years very juicy!!
Honey
Crisp............................................................Mid
September
What can you say...One of the most amazing apples ever introduced!!
Sweet with just a hint of tartness makes this apple almost
impossible to put down...ADDICTION...may describe this apple
more precisely!!
Wolf
River.............................................................
Mid September
A very large old tyme apple. Even flavored and very dry when
cooked down requiring very little thickeners in baking.
Empire................................................................
Late September
A dark red macintosh sport with a bit more crunch than the
macintosh. Very juicy with a beautiful white flesh. We love
this apple for our pies and caramel apples...then we found
out it's great eating too!!!
Haralson.............................................................
Late September
If you like a semi-tart apple like Granny Smith or Braeburn,
try this University of Minnesota release from several years
ago. You may never eat the others again. Beautiful white flesh,
crisp, juicy...arguably the most under-rated apple ever.
N.W.
Greening......................................................Late
September
Our only green apple on the orchard. Ripening a bit later
in the season, this is a larger apple with a fairly even flavor.
Great for making pies and baked apples.
Connell
Red.........................................................Late
September
A Connell's family introduction years ago. A red sport of
the Fireside apple. Large apples with a very sweet pleasing
flavor make these a great eating apple.
Golden
Crunch.....................................................Late
September
Late maturing Yellow Delicious type, Mostly sweet and juicy.
Uses include eating and baking. Many enjoy this apple in cider
and sauces.
Regent................................................................Late
September
Another University of Minnesota release. White flesh and very
juicy with a sweet flavor, accented by a hint of tartness.
A beautiful apple with a "Striped" red appearance
most years.
Fortune.................................................................Early
October
Like Honeycrisp? Try this one!! A large crisp apple with great
sweet eating flavor. We even found we LOVE to bake pies with
this one - another "sleeper" here at the orchard.
Fireside.................................................................Early
October
The old Fireside. The longer we can let this apple hang, the
better it gets. One of the sweetest apples on the orchard,
this is a large apple, blush red over a yellow creamy base.
A true star.
Red
Delicious.........................................................Early
October
Dark red apple but maybe more crisp than the delicious you
are used to in the stores. This apple gets better with storage.
Ida
Red.................................................................Early
October
Beautiful bright red and uniquely shaped. This apple is probably
the most tart apple on the orchard. Prone to fireblight so
quantities are usually limited - but wonderful eating and
baking qualities.
Keepsake...............................................................Early
October
Hard juicy semi-sweet apple. Gets its name from its great
keeping trait. Those who like this apple buy it by the bushel!!
Honey
Gold............................................................Early
October
A yellow late apple that is thought to be a parent of the
Honeycrisp. Very sweet and juicy with a pleasing texture.
One of our very favorites that can be limited in some years
due to early cold.
Fuji.......................................................................Late
October
Our latest maturing apple. Abundantly sweet and juicy and
very hard. Some years there are not enough growing days to
get this apple ripe - but years that cooperate...WOW!!
